I was over at my cousin Melissa's house tonight and she served a dinner that I thought was a great idea.
Her husband Jerry went to El Pollo Loco, a chicken take-out place in Los Angeles, and picked up some roasted chicken and some sides. This wasn't fried chicken, but the kind that's marinated and then fire-roasted.
I think this is a great staple for dinner because it's healthy, saves time and serves a family of any size.
What I recommend at chicken places if you're following the Caveman Diet is to get as many pieces of chicken as your family needs, plus some extras for lunch the next day. Then for the sides get mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables, as well as a salad if they offer one.
Skip the bread, tortillas, rice, beans and any other grain or bean side dishes if you're sticking to the recommended Caveman Foods.
Since the Caveman Diet includes chicken, steamed vegetables, salads and potatoes, you can get a complete Caveman dinner at a drive-through chicken retaurant.
It's one example of how fast food can make healthy eating easy.
Caveman Soda
If you crave a fizzy drink but want to make healthier choices, why not try drinking what my step-dad Jeff and I drink all the time: Caveman Soda.
To make Caveman Soda, add a splash of your favorite juice to a tall glass, then fill the glass with unsweetened soda water. You only need a few tablespoons,of juice since you're just going for the fruit essense, not the sweetness.
While Caveman Soda isn't sweet like traditional soda, it's flavorful and refreshing. Plus it's natural and has very few calories or carbs.
Getting Your "Sweet Fix"
If you don't yet want to give up the sweetness that comes with drinking soda, then add some liquid stevia to your Caveman Soda at first . You can gradually add less until you've kicked the "sweet drink habit."
Stevia is a natural sweetener with no calories or carbs. It comes from the leaves of a plant. Similar to artificial sweeteners, it tricks your tongue into "thinking" you're tasting something sweet. However, stevia is a natural plant extract rather than a laboratory-produced chemical.
If you'd like to use stevia in your Caveman Soda, tea or coffee to gradually wean yourself off sweet drinks, then buy liquid stevia, which you can add a drop at a time. This allows you to control the sweetness and to use less over time.
I've seen liquid stevia at Whole Foods Market and in some other high-end health food stores. It's normally sold in the herbal remedies section.
Fun Flavors
I like drinking Caveman Soda as-is, without added sweetness.
It's great with a splash of unsweetened natural cranberry juice, pommegranate juice, orange juice, lemon, lime, or any juice you can think of.
It's fun to try different flavors.
Why not kick your sweet drink habit the Caveman way and try a Caveman Soda with your next meal? ____________________________________________________
