New Health Advice Columnist & Livestrong Challenge Team Nutritionist

First of all, I wanted to share that starting this week, I'll be the Nutrition and Fitness Advice Columnist for the Pflugerville Pflag, the award-winning official weekly newspaper that serves the residents of Pflugerville, Texas.

(Pflugerville is a city just northeast of Austin where many Dell Computer employees live.)

My advice column comes out in every Thursday's paper in the Health Section. If you live or work in Pflugerville, feel free to email me your nutrition and fitness questions that you would like answered in the column.

I am also the nutritionist for the Mix 94.7 & Pure Austin Livestrong Challenge Team. Livestrong is a biking and running event in Austin that benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

This year, participants in the 5K running event can get free group training sessions from fitness specialists, including myself, at Pure Austin Fitness on three days, the first being Wednesday, September 12. For more information, contact Pure Austin Fitness at (512) 342-2200.

Food Smarts

Caveman Fast Food

You may be following the Caveman Diet and wondering what you can eat when you're short on time and on-the-go.

If so, this article is for you!

The basis of the Caveman Diet is eating natural foods that our caveman and cavewoman ancestors would have hunted and gathered.

This helps you to stay fit and healthy, keeps your blood sugar balanced, boosts your immune system, keeps your weight down, and reduces sugar and overall food cravings. Quite a lot of benefits!

Here are some meals that you can eat on the Caveman Diet at different fast food restaurants:

McDonald's

WOMEN

- Chicken Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken. Use half of the Caesar Dressing. No croutons.

- Apple Juice Box

355 calories in the meal

MEN

- Chicken Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken. Use all of the Caesar Dressing. No croutons.

- Apple Juice Box

450 calories in the meal

Note: The salad is pre-made with parmesan cheese, which you can remove if you like. If you remove the cheese, the women's meal will contain 305 calories and the men's meal will contain 400 calories.

Apple juice can spike your blood sugar, so drink it slowly. Try alternating the apple juice with sips of water. When you drink it this way, you'll stay more full.

Wendy's

WOMEN

-Mandarin Chicken Salad. Almonds only. No dressing or fried noodles. Use salt and pepper on the salad if you like.

- Side order of mandarin oranges

370 calories in the meal

MEN

-Mandarin Chicken Salad. Almonds only. No dressing or fried noodles. Use salt and pepper on the salad if you like.

- Plain Baked Potato. Eat half of the potato.

425 calories in the meal

Note: The mandarin oranges contain a little sugar, but they're not overly-sweet so I don't mind including them.

I typically eat a small apple from home instead of the side order of mandarin oranges. If the Wendy's you visit offers apple juice, you can substitute that instead of the side order of oranges.

Subway

WOMEN

- Salad with chicken. No cheese. No crackers. Include any vegetables you like. Olive oil blend on the salad. You can add salt and pepper, too, if you like.

- Box of raisins.

360 calories in the meal

MEN

- Salad with chicken. No cheese. No crackers. Include any vegetables you like. Ranch Dressing -- Use half the package. You can add salt and pepper, too, if you like.

- Box of raisins.

430 calories in the meal

Note: I usually ask for double vegetables, which they should give you for no extra charge.

Now you have a few options to try when you'd like to eat Caveman meals on-the-go. Not only are these meals healthy, they're also very filling for the small amount of calories they contain.

There are many more Caveman fast food meals. Try these out and you'll improve your health by eating like a caveman in the modern world.
